Vesterbro is a neighborhood or area in the city district of Århus C located to the west of city centre. The neighborhood is not as old as Midtbyen, the historical centre, since there wasn't much than farms and small houses here before the city walls were torn down back in 1851.
Vesterbro is covering an area between the university, Midtbyen, the rail yard bordering Frederiksbjerg, Aabyhøj and Århus V. The area is divided into different areas itself, with different names. The is the older part, closest to Midtbyen, with the oldest apartments. Then there is the Aarhus Botanical Gardens, there is the old brewery, there is the hospital to the far west of Vesterbro and then the newest part with buildings under construction.
The inner part of Vesterbro is consisting of Øgadekvarteret (lit. English, "the Island street quarter") where most streets are named after different Danish islands. The main square, Vesterbro Torv, used to be a market square for pigs and other animals in the 1880s. Now it is proberly the busiest junction in Vesterbro. Half a mile west to Vesterbro Torv is one of the cities most famous landmarks, Den Gamle By.
